Summary
Ivo Zalar: Zagreb is building a wonderful mine. Anthology of Croatian poetry about Zagreb
Zagreb grade divni moj: Anthology of Croatian poetry about Zagreb is a valuable and comprehensive collection of poems selected and edited by the distinguished Croatian literary theorist and critic Dr. Ivo Zalar, and published in 1996 by the Varaždin publishing house Katarina Zrinski. The title of the collection is directly taken from the legendary patriotic poem Zagrebu by August Šenoa ("Glory, glory to you, Zagreb-grad divni moj!"), which suggests the warm and affectionate tone of the entire book right from the start. Conceived primarily with the noble purpose of serving as part of compulsory school reading for elementary school students, this anthology in its 240 pages goes far beyond exclusively pedagogical frameworks. In it, Zalar made a praiseworthy, chronologically and aesthetically refined section, gathering the verses of about sixty of the best Croatian writers who in different historical periods - from the awakening of national consciousness at the time of the Illyrian movement until the end of the twentieth century - found lasting inspiration in the Croatian metropolis. Inside the book, which is visually enriched with suggestive artistic Marko Čolić, historical vigils, melancholic Kajkavian songs and modern, urban verses. The reader can follow how the literary experience of the city has changed over the centuries by walking through the verses of literary greats such as the aforementioned Šenoa, Antun Gustav Matoš, Dragutin Domjanić, Tin Ujević, Miroslav Krleža and Gustav Krklec. This book has been remembered as Zagreb's most beautiful poetic monument and essential reading for all generations who want to feel the authentic poetic spirit and rhythm of Zagreb's streets, Gornjograd's gas lamps and the quiet banks of the Sava.
