Summary
James Hadley Chase: Tiger by the Tail
Tiger by the Tail (original English: Tiger by the Tail) is an extremely tense and dynamic crime novel by the British writer James Hadley Chase, "the king of thrillers", originally published in 1954, while it became extremely popular in our region through the publication of the Zagreb Spektra from 1984 as part of the well-known library KRIMBIS (Criminal pearls of the world). The plot of the novel reaches for a classic and always exciting motif - an ordinary, calm and simple man innocently wanders into the underground and is drawn into an unstoppable vortex of criminal events. The main character is bank clerk Ken Holland, a married man whose life is orderly, predictable and somewhat monotonous. When his wife Ann leaves, Ken, influenced by the persuasion of his close friend Parker, decides to discard his usual caution and seek a short-term, casual entertainment in the city's nightlife by visiting an upscale prostitute. However, what should have remained a harmless secret turns into a terrifying nightmare when a girl is mysteriously murdered in her apartment that same night, and Ken finds himself panicking in front of the victim's body. Fleeing the scene of the crime to save his reputation and marriage, he unwittingly pulls the titular "tiger by the tail" and falls into a complex web of blackmail, dangerous gangsters, corrupt politicians and police investigations. In this work, Chase excels in building tension without idleness, leading the reader through dark street mazes, saloon intrigues and the psychological breakdown of the protagonist who loses control over his own destiny. The novel offers a sharp study of how just one wrong decision and a moment of weakness can collapse the entire civic semblance of morality and safety in a second, turning an ordinary citizen into a hunted beast fighting for his bare life.
