Summary
Pero Kvesić: What they do to me & what I do to them
"What they do to me & what I do to them" is a cult novel by the Croatian journalist and writer Pero Kvesić, originally published in sequels in the legendary youth weekly "Polet" at the end of the seventies (1978/1979). It was first published as a complete book in 1984 as part of the Belgrade edition Independent Editions by Slobodan Mašić
The book provides an authentic, witty and witty chronicle of Zagreb's urban youth from the end of the seventies. Following the everyday life of his characters, Kvesić plastically portrays a specific generational atmosphere, dealing with topics such as:
- The search for identity: Growing up on the streets of Zagreb, within the "squad", and through music and literature (with inevitable references to cult books such as Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye).
- Generation gap: The misunderstanding of young people within the family and the wider, more rigid social and political system of that time.
- Male-female relations and erotica: Kvesić is known for his relaxed, direct, but also extremely charming writing about love, sex and youthful relationships, which he later confirmed as the editor of the cult magazine Erotika.
The novel is considered one of the most important representatives of the so-called prose in jeans
