Summary
Tonči Petrasov Marović: Paths
Paths are an extremely significant poem by prominent Croatian poet and writer Tonči Petrasov Marović, published in 1967 by the Split subcommittee Matica Croatian. This work belongs to the early phase of the author's rich and authentic oeuvre, a period in which Marović intensively played with the very structure of language and explored its ultimate limits and expressive possibilities. Through the verses of this poem, the author dissolves classical syntactic forms and creates a condensed, associative and modernist poetic thread, which he tries to map the inner man's winding paths, doubts and existential wanderings. The title "trajectories" thus function as a multi-layered motif – they denote a physical movement through a specific Mediterranean, native space, but even more so an internal mental process and the search for meaning and one's own creative origin. Although in his later collections Marović turned significantly more to ancient and national linguistic heritage and archaic, melodic Čakavian lexemes, this earlier poem remains recorded as an excellent and uncompromising example of Croatian modernist poetry of the second half of the twentieth century. Her hermeticity and avant-garde sensibility bear witness to the author's early creative courage, which later profiled him as one of the most original, "unaligned" voices of his generation.
