Summary
Dragan Pavelić: Spring in the Karolinental
Spring in the Karolinental is a layered, comprehensive and deeply thought-out psychological-historical novel by the Bosnian and Croatian writer and psychiatrist Dragan Pavelić, who in 2009 won the prestigious V.B.Z.'s award for the best unpublished novel. The author, using his rich professional experience in psychoanalysis, brings a peculiar and "sentimental" life history of the main character - an unloved bastard, a double murderer and a long-time prisoner from the penitentiary in Lepoglava, who, despite his dark past, manages to become an exemplary husband, father and citizen at a later age. The plot is firmly rooted in Pavelić's native Bosnia and Sarajevo, covering a wide and turbulent time period from the end of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century (more precisely, from 1890 to 1964). Through the fate of the main character and the structure of the story, which is told in two voices, the novel develops into a large and complex chronicle of crime and punishment, human suffering, guilt and ultimate redemption. At the same time, Pavelić portrays with exceptional sensitivity the permeation and constant collisions of different faiths, traditions and cultures that characterized old Sarajevo, following how historical ruptures and modernization are reflected in the intimate life of a small man. The book is extremely rich in style, it continues the poetics of the author's earlier works such as Sarajli, and its authenticity is additionally completed by the dictionary of lesser-known, local words and Turkish words located at the very end of the edition
