Poema o pruzi
Tartalija Gvido
Summary
Gvido Tartalja: Poem o pruzi
Poema o pruzi is a distinguished work of writer Gvido Tartalja, originally published in 1946 by the Belgrade publishing house Novo pokolenje. Although Tartalja is primarily remembered in the history of literature as an extremely prolific, warm and popular author of poems for children, with this poem he entered a specific wave of post-war socialist literature and the so-called "building of the country". The action and the entire poetic charge of the work are directly dedicated to the participants of the legendary youth labor actions, with a special emphasis on the builders and the construction of the Brčko - Banovići railway, which at that time was a symbol of the collective pride and work ethic of the Yugoslav youth. Through rhythmic, dynamic and metaphorically rich verses, Tartalja celebrates togetherness, leaving home fields and school desks for a higher goal, and transforming a harsh landscape into symbols of modernization and a new social order. The poet skilfully interweaves the motifs of hard physical work, setting thresholds (slippers) and breaking through embankments with lyrical motifs of youthful enthusiasm, dreams of the future and the summer restoration of the homeland. Despite the emphasized ideological and propaganda background of its time, the poem retains a high artistic and aesthetic value thanks to the author's innate sense of rhythm, imagery and linguistic expression. Today this work has the status of a valuable historical and literary document of the first post-war phase, testifying to the time when poetry went directly to construction sites and sought to become a rhythmic charm of a generation.
