Summary
Milan Begović: Dunja u kovčegu
First edition
Illustrations by Ljubo Babić
Dunja u kovčegu is the first novel by prominent Croatian modernist Milan Begović, published in 1921, which earned the flattering title of one of the best lyrical novels in the history of domestic literature in literary criticism. It is an extremely sensitive, psychologically refined and melodramatic story with strong autobiographical elements that exposes the secrets and elusive nature of male-female relationships. The plot follows the passionate, but ultimately tragic and impossible love between two completely opposite characters and worlds - the refined, worldly bon vivant Dušan and the fragile, naive girl Rođena, nicknamed Dunja. Begović begins the love drama in the patriarchal, rural setting of Dalmatian Zagora (inspired by the author's native Vrlic region), and then takes it through European metropolises such as Paris and Vienna all the way to the fashionable Opatija Riviera. When Rođena marries another under the pressure of her environment, she loses her inner joy and slowly closes in on herself, metaphorically locking her soul and Dušan's letters. The main value of the novel lies in the unique combination of the tradition of romanticism and realism with a modern stream of consciousness and an innovative form in which prose is merged into pure poetry. Through a condensed lyrical atmosphere, rich descriptions of landscapes that reflect the characters' inner turmoil and folk folklore motifs, Begović created a subtle and timeless masterpiece about the unbridgeable gap between illusion and reality and man's eternal search for complete emotional closeness.
